The ranger has a nice view from his comfy hut.

It's very easy to fall through the edge of the ice. It happened to a guy we met while going up.

Location: Elfin Lakes (this is the North one), Garibaldi Provincial Park, Beautiful British Columbia, Canada.
Equipment: Nikon D90 + Tokina 11-16mm + Tiffen Polarizer.
Technique: Photomatix Pro 4.0 and Photoshop CS5 from 3 RAW exposures.
Download: Wallpaper up to 2560x1600, 2560x1440, and 1600x1200.

Of course it does. The snow gets blown out so easily otherwise.

This is amazing. And this is on top of one of the glaciers there?

Not glaciers. This is just snow which hasn't melted since the winter, and will probably not melt this summer at all. Cold & late summer, although the weather now is just perfect.

Wow, so it's almost like permafrost, huh? That's pretty cool, actually. Few hundred years go by without that melting, and more snow building up on it, and it'll without a doubt become a glacier.

Just this year. The glaciers are receding around here, not new ones forming :)

That must be pretty cool to see the glaciers breaking up as they melt. I've only seen a few chunks of ice fall off of a glacier when I was on a cruise in Alaska from far away. It was one of those coastal glaciers that's advancing faster than it is receding. And it was already advancing into the bay.

I walked into a huge ice cave at a local glacier which wasn't there last year. It was big enough to fit a bus.

It wasn't there the year before, and I'm sure it won't be there this year either. Maybe another one.

Awesome. That's why glaciers are amazing. They're just so unpredictable in term of beauty and power. They're always changing.
